The YPA Weekly Round-Up
Articles, events, and opportunities for arts professionals prioritizing professional development, social and cultural issues, and resources within the field.
This week the College Art Association’s Annual Conference arrives to town and we hope you take advantage of their generous Pay-As-You-Wish policy. It’s perfect for non-members, those not able to afford the steep ticket price, or those who can only attend a few sessions throughout the week. Also featured this week is Fractured Atlas’s staff page outlining their company policies and employee resources. We found this entire site incredibly informative. The transparency and support this arts organization gives its workers should be an industry standard. And though not all of the resources are relevant for a Fractured Atlas outsider, we recommend the Autonomy, Decisions & Conversations, and Aligning Objectives sections. More arts resources and tips in our Read, Go, and Apply sections below—and onward Young Professionals!
Those two puppies at the Met Museum simply made our day! This week, we want to feel the same amount of chill as the two of them and just breeze through it. There’s plenty of great events in our Go section to accomplish this, or relax listening to the CI to Eye podcast while learning something at the same time. And there’s still time to Apply for the 2050 Administrative Fellowship at the New York Theater Workshop. Here’s to feeling the chill this week without actually freezing like we did in last week’s cold!
The deadlines are approaching and it's time to level up! Connect with other rising leaders in the field while building the skills you need through NYFA’s Emerging Leaders Boot Camp. Get your application together because there are just two more days to apply! And speaking of mentorship programs, our Apply and Go sections provide a few more opportunities for growth near and far. All that and more in this week’s round-up!
If you’ve had the joys of a long weekend—we salute you and hope that you stayed bundled up on your couch under many layers of blankets! Today it’s back to braving the cold and dragging yourself to the office, your creative project, your freelance gig, or your job search. To support you from afar, we have some inspiring advice for Entrepreneurs for you to Read alongside an article explaining why it sometimes takes us 10 days to do something that takes 10 minutes (we’re wiser now!). Under Go, we’re seeing you discussing Blackness and Modernism or taking in a free concert at Symphony Space this weekend. And if new year means new job, there’s plenty of opportunities (including for the full-time employed arts professional) under apply!
For our first round up of the year, be sure to Read our new Event Recap for the Conflict Resolution workshop we held in partnership with New York Foundation for the Arts last Fall. Fractured Atlas’s guide to measuring your activity and productiveness is a great start towards a mindful and present new year. For Go, poster making, fundraising how-tos, and a concise list of art shows around town, you’ll find something for everyone. NYFA’s Emerging Leaders Boot camp is a valuable experience for taking your arts career to the next level and has a deadline quickly approaching at the end of the month - don’t wait to apply!
Not sure if you’ve had enough of holiday parties yet? Well, enjoy the coming last few days to cram in celebrating with colleagues and friends before the year comes to a close. Events in the city are also slowly winding down in our GO section, but there’s always plenty to READ while enjoying some cozy warm drink and holiday sugary treats. And if you need a break from the stress of gift shopping, why not skim through open job opportunities under APPLY. Cheers to the holidays!
As the weeks propel toward the new year, our Arts Weekly is a reminder to slow down and enjoy all the season has to offer. Learn about the new updated MTA station art in our Reads section and check out one of our favorite events, the Center for Performance Research’s Open House evening in Go. For Apply, open calls, administrative fellowships and jobs picked just for you. Onwards into the holidays.
It’s the last sprint to the holiday break and doesn’t December just always feel a little too short? So many holiday parties, drinks, year-end festivities to go to before we wind down this year. While enjoying those cocktails, there’s always a chance to expand your network, and in READ we share an article on how to do so. This week we’re also loving the interview with one of our YPA Members Luiza Teixeira-Vesey from NYFA. We share mostly free events in our GO section, we know budget’s are tight during gifting season but that doesn’t mean you have to cut down on your outings. Under APPLY this week, we’re sharing a very special opportunity to volunteer with us! We would love to hear from you if you’re interested in contributing and gaining experience at the same time. Write us :)
Welcome back and hello Monday! To help you jump straight into the holidays and support artists along the way, check out NYFA’s Holiday Gift Guide in our READ section. Work on managing your digital persona at two separate events in GO and keep your resume up to date and eyes peeled because we have lots of YPA Member recommendations in APPLY. All that and more below!
It cometh our way—a well-deserved break for all of us! Hopefully a lot of turkey, family, and friends time is in your future. And if you’re travelling, may the roads be clear and the airport lines short. For a travel Read, we’ve included articles on Louis Armstrong and the cult of creativity, or maybe you want to start a daily sketchbook? If you’re still in the city this week, there are still some events at NYFA and the Museum of Jewish Heritage to Go to. And maybe after you’ve recovered from your food coma you want to Apply for some jobs?
