YPA Arts Weekly | August 13, 2018

August 12, 2018 by Young Professionals in the Arts in Weekly Round-Up

This week, our round-up features strategies for creating plans, busting down blocks and building a more attainable future.

In Reads, an argument to consider the use of language and terms within arts management is explored and AMFA lays out a step by step guide for drafting a cohesive marketing plan. For Go,  get your grant questions answered at the first session with Brooklyn Arts Council and last call for Shakespeare in the Park! We grabbed standby tickets after work and enjoyed the quintessential NYC summer night. What's left on your summer-time bucket list before it’s too late? If 'apply for jobs' is on that list, as usual - you're covered. Check out highlights below and the full shiny new list on the YPA Blog!

August 05, 2018 by Young Professionals in the Arts in Weekly Round-Up

How have you been using the summer? Is it a time for professional or personal growth? Or are you using it to take a breather, gather energy, and prepare for a new season? We have tried to cram in a little bit of both, all the while trying to make more time for family and friends and all the fun (and often free!) summer events NYC has to offer. We know you can't manage to do it all in a day, but while the summer days seem longer, we sure do try! :)

Arts Weekly Round-Up February 5 - 11

February 03, 2018 by Young Professionals in the Arts in Weekly Round-Up

What do the arts have to do with the Super Bowl? Well, look no further than Philly and Boston's museums to give you another (artsy) reason to follow the game. If you're however feeling bored during the time between Super Bowl commercials and before and after the halftime show - rest assured that being bored is good for you. Find out more in our Reads and Feeds section, where we're inspired by how music improves the lives of people with dementia and the artist Doreen Garner who set up a tattoo parlor dedicated to Black Pride. Catch her in person this week at a film premiere and check out Around Town for more events to attend this week, like the talk on Michelangelo just in time for the Met Museum's blockbuster exhibition. If the new year means a new job for you, let The Hunt section start you off, or start browsing the job sites mentioned. Onwards through this cold, YPA-ers!

Arts Weekly Round-Up January 22 - 28

January 19, 2018 by Young Professionals in the Arts in Weekly Round-Up

Can you hear that? Yesterday the sound of activists, feminists, artists, and change-makers loudly banded together for both the Women's March and Art Action Day (AAD) for programs, art works,  performances, and protests. AAD's motto Art Saves Democracy aims to promote unification in this turbulent time of political unrest and inequality. Read more in our Reads and Feeds section, where you can also catch a few resonating reads on career pursuit and growth. In Around Town a reminder that there is still time to reserve your Art of Empowerment ticket hosted by Women of Culture next weekend and plenty of programs that promote growth and personal, professional, and social development. The Hunt has a bit of something for everyone - marketing, development, sales, part-time, long-term - the right job is out there for you. And if you don't see something you like, be sure to explore each of The Hunt's job sites!

Arts Weekly Round-Up Dec 11 - 17

December 10, 2017 by Young Professionals in the Arts in Weekly Round-Up

Only two more last weeks left to squeeze in as much art and culture before the holiday coma hits. For Reads & Feeds, it's all about development and growth with tips on fundraising and nailing that interview. The Hunt highlights everything from part-time production work to managing a museum marketing force. So much is happening Around Town - Stop by the Roger Smith Hotel for our third and final Professional Development Workshop series to talk about navigating promotions within the arts. We hope you dance off the week at MoMa PS1's annual holiday party and check out the Guggenheim's holiday concert in their iconic rotunda!

Arts Weekly Round-Up Nov 20-27

November 19, 2017 by Young Professionals in the Arts in Weekly Round-Up

Somehow the holidays have arrived and with that at last, a slower rhythm is starting to pulse through the arts scene. Our Around Town feature reflects that wind-down so we stuffed our Reads and Feeds section with a little extra love to get you through your holiday travels and awkward dinner conversations. Hear how the art world is handling the rampant wave of sexual harassment and gender discrimination flooding the country and then brush up on the public monument debate ahead of next week’s public hearings. With so much social unrest, change is on the cusp - stay informed, active, and try not to make a scene at the Thanksgiving table when that one uncle starts ranting. For The Hunt, we heard y’all loud and clear at our workshop last week - we have a round-up of Development and Marketing jobs and some tips on how to write that Thank You letter, even if it wasn’t an official interview. Trot full speed ahead, Turkeys!

Ok, now, let us get our frozen fingers warmed up so we can type this blog post. What just happened? How are we in the depths of winter now? We're scrambling to find our winter coats in the backs of our closets and reminded to start ticking off some of those looming end-of-year goals. What are your goals last bits of the year?  Personally, we're looking to hone our interview skills at this week's Arts Job Interview workshop on Tuesday, November 14. We hope to see you there!

Arts Weekly Round-Up Nov 6 - Nov 12

November 08, 2017 by Young Professionals in the Arts in Weekly Round-Up

We all believe in the transformative power of the arts, otherwise we most likely wouldn't be working in the sector. But sometimes we find ourselves having a hard time explaining it to friends, family, or acquaintances. So this week, we're sharing some articles to help you out. Not only does arts education help with school attendance but students develop better grades in Math and English too. And we're sharing an inspiring story of how art therapy helps veterans cope with PTSD. If that's not enough motivation - come join us next week for our Arts Job Interview workshop on November 14 and land that next dream job in the arts!

Whether you're searching for a job in development or contemplating going back to school for your Master's, today's Read & Feeds section is pointed towards building a stronger you and a socially united future. The highlighted events also tackle that theme head on with Creative Time and Pioneer Works' day long event, WTF DO WE DO NOW. Hosted by the Yes Men, this event is bound to provoke deep engagement with our current political situation. The Brooklyn Museum also hosts a discussion on curating social practice this week. On Tuesday, practice your pitch with us and ELYNA at the Roger Smith Hotel for our next mentorship session, It's All About the Pitch. Can't make it? Arts Weekly Round-Up October 2 - 8

October 01, 2017 by Young Professionals in the Arts in Weekly Round-Up

This past week both YPA co-founders have found themselves out of town, one in Chicago and one in Toronto. While loving the time away from NYC and exploring new cities, can we just say that there's no place like home? What is it with the slow walking pace? We've got museums to see, and performances to watch, and sightseeing to do! In the same vein, we've been reading a mix of learning oriented articles (who knew blockchain would be great for the arts?), admiring people that get up at 4a.m., and lol-ing at our Twitter feeds for a change because of two London museums. Let's hit the ground running this upcoming week!

Arts Weekly Round-Up September 24 - October 1

September 23, 2017 by Young Professionals in the Arts in Weekly Round-Up

After a long weekend of perusing Bushwick Open Studios and the Printed Matter's NY Art Book Fair, we are feeling overwhelmed and inspired by the productive creativity flowing in this city. Great motivation to jump into a new week. To go with that, we've gathered articles that tackle equity, professional development, and calls to action. Around town includes a networking opportunity for our curatorial and art-making members and a powerhouse panel on museum representation. The Job Hunt is extra long, because so many amazing YPA members keep sending us over leads. :) With that collaborative spirit in mind, let's knock out this week!

Weekly Round Up May 8 - 14

May 07, 2017 by Young Professionals in the Arts in Weekly Round-Up

To say that we're fed up with this cold weather in May (!!) might be an understatement. All the more reason to immerse ourselves in artsy events this week, keep reading interesting articles and be productive at work. The lack of picnics in the park can only be a good thing as we set our timers to be productive for 25 minutes at a time (see For The Homebody section below). The remainder of the week will be spent browsing the visualized map of the art world and thinking about our portfolio career. As always, if you're on the job hunt - we've got you covered.
